Water chemical parameters in a trout production center in Huancavelica, Peru

Abstract

The objective of this study was to verify whether the chemical parameters of the water in a trout farm in Huancavelica comply with national environmental regulations. This basic and descriptive study, with a non-experimental, cross-sectional design, was conducted in a trout farm supplied by the Sacsamarca River through diversion canals, with a total flow of 330 L/s. Six water sampling points were established in the trout starter, grow-out, and grow-out ponds, using observation techniques and observation sheets to record measurements taken with mechanical instruments. Data were collected on pH, dissolved oxygen, chemical oxygen demand, nitrates, and phosphates, which were processed and subsequently compared with the MINAM Environmental Quality Standards (ECA). Only at one sampling point did the pH show a value slightly below the reference range of the ECAs (6.5 to 9.0), while at four points slightly high phosphate levels were recorded compared to the reference value of 0.05 mg/L established for total phosphorus in the ECAs. In conclusion, except for phosphates, the chemical parameters of the water at the trout farm comply with national environmental standards.
